Dr. Turner is an advocate for what works; she has reviewed the studies and, after issuing several cannabis prescriptions, has very positive feedback from patients.
Cannabis: A natural medicine for thousands of years. Properly prescribed and used, cannabis can help patients reduce dependence on other drugs and their often harsh side effects.
Mary Jo Decker is Dr. Turner's Nurse Practitioner Assistant. She has great empathy for patients suffering from painful symptoms, and is ready to listen to you.
This isn't as bad as it sounds, because...
We don't know of any insurance company that will cover a cannabis appointment or cannabis prescription. If you know of one, please tell us!
Our fees are lower than nearly everyone else, we checked.
The first appointment is to establish a qualifying medical condition, and to establish initial dosages.
If you don't qualify for the Texas Compassionate Use Program (TCUP), you will not be charged for the appointment.
All conditions (except PTSD) require documentation from your diagnosing physician in order to proceed with a prescription. Acquiring medical records from the diagnosing physician takes a couple days. It saves time if you have your own copies of medical records.
PTSD can be diagnosed directly by Dr. Turner based on symptoms and answers to various questions. However, even in this case, supporting documentation from other professionals (e.g. counselors, doctors) is very helpful.
Your first prescription is typically written to cover at least 4 months. But if you find the initial dosage is too low to relieve symptoms, call and let us know! Legally, we must have a face-to-face appointment (i.e. a telemedicine appointment with a working camera) to adjust the dose. This appointment is free within the first 30 days.
The first follow up is about 4-6 months for new users. After this you must have a renewal appointment within 12 months.
The home page of this website has the fee schedule for non-cannabis appointments, about half way down the page. See https://ramiturner.com

If you have your own copies of medical records from previous doctor visits which establish a qualifying diagnosis, then that will be the easiest way to proceed.
But for most patients the records establishing the diagnosis are in the possession of the doctor who made the diagnosis. In this case, your other doctor will need authorization from you to send these medical records to Dr. Turner. More about this in the next section.
In some cases involving PTSD, Dr. Turner can make the diagnosis herself. But even in such cases, pre-existing documentation of PTSD from a professional (like a doctor or a certified counselor) is very helpful.
While some doctors are unwilling to prescribe medical cannabis, or even prohibited by their employer, many doctors, including Dr. Turner, are willing to prescribe it in appropriate circumstances.
You can make an appointment with Dr. Turner using the button near the top of this page. Obtaining medical records from other doctors, which is required for most patients, takes time. Unless you have (or can easily get) copies of your medical records, make your appointment a week in advance to allow sufficient time. If we receive your records quickly then we may be able to move your appointment to an earlier date if you'd like.
You will receive an email with intake forms to be filled out. (We have reports from several patients that our email ends up in their Spam folder, or Junk email...so be sure to check your spam and junk folders.) In addition, there will be some items that you will need to upload, for example: an image of your Texas driver's license.
If you have copies of your own medical records, then you would upload files (e.g. scanned images, PDFs, etc.) which document your diagnosis. However most patients don't have copies of their own records, in that case you would need to authorize your other doctor to release records to Dr. Turner. We can send an authorization form if needed.
At this time, all of Dr. Turner's appointments are via telehealth. This means you will need a smart phone or a tablet or a computer with a working camera and microphone. (Camera and microphone are required.)
Dr. Turner will thoroughly discuss relevant topics including your medical background, your current health, and emotional state. Of course she will also answer questions that you have.
If medical cannabis is appropriate for your situation, then Dr. Turner will issue a prescription.
Dr. Turner will send your cannabis prescription via internet to the Compassionate Use Registry of Texas, also called CURT.
Next, you will reach out to one of three companies licensed by the state to dispense medical cannabis. (In the future additional companies might be licensed, but as of early 2024 there are 3 companies operating in Texas: https://tx.goodblend.com, https://texasoriginal.com, and https://texas.getfluent.com .) Over the phone, the company representative will ask for your name and a few other pieces of identifying information. This will allow them to look up and verify your prescription on the CURT system.
You will have a choice of under-the-tongue cannabis oil, edibles infused with cannabis oil, or flavored beverages. Other methods of ingesting cannabis, e.g. vaping or smoking, are not authorized under Texas law.
The company may have options for delivery by courier directly to you, or they may provide you with a date and choice of location where you can pick up your prescription.
Payment is made when picking up your prescription, often by cash. You'll want to verify payment details with the company ahead of time.
In general, your initial prescription will cover 4 to 6 months. Before your prescription runs out, you will need to set a follow-up appointment.
Subsequent prescriptions are usually for 12 months, thus ongoing follow-up appointments are also 12 months apart.
When you pick up your cannabis prescription, all the containers should have your name on the outside, just like ordinary prescriptions from the pharmacy. Do not remove your name from the outside of the container. If law enforcement ever has an occasion to visually inspect your prescription container, they will need to see your name on the outside.
The amount of THC in medical cannabis should not be enough to cause intoxication. Rather, the purpose is to relieve symptoms of your condition; and the prescribed doses should be enough to accomplish this.
If you have any feelings of intoxication, e.g. dizzy, tired, or buzzed, then tell your doctor. And, of course, don't drive.
If you have an encounter with law enforcement in which questions about the legitimacy of your medical cannabis arise (your medical cannabis, not someone else's), then law enforcement officers can use your Texas driver's license to look you up in the CURT system. Texas does not have a "cannabis card" like other states, instead your driver's license serves the role of a cannabis card. Once you are found in the CURT system, and the label on the prescription container matches your details from the CURT system, then questions about your medical cannabis should be resolved.
Cannabis has been illegal in the USA at the Federal level for almost 90 years, and it still is. However, many states have now changed their laws to allow its use. Technically, cannabis is still illegal in Texas. But THC, the primary active ingredient in cannabis, is legal for qualifying medical conditions.
Here is just a little about what drives me to help others. I didn't know I would find a way out of the pit of pain and exhaustion from my condition. By all accounts, I was going to get worse. I thank God for the opportunity and ability to have learned medicine. It took more than standard care to get here, but the Great Physician has been training me through my own body. And it's time to help you.
